Declines and glorious comebacks are all part of Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward
A rough-and-tumble settlement, destruction by fire, immigrant-fueled rebirth, severe declines and glorious comebacks, are all part of the multi-layered narrative of Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward.
Mod Gen, a modern general store in Milwaukee’s Third Ward, is closing after more than two decades in business.
“After twenty-five years it is time for us to retire and start a new chapter of life,” CEO Doug McDonald wrote in a Sept. 8 statement. “This journey has been filled with many successes and more than our fair share of challenges, and we are so grateful for the patronage and support of the greater Milwaukee community that made it possible.”
The store’s last day will be Dec. 24.
Mod Gen, 211 N. Broadway, sells a range of plants, books, ceramics, kitchenware and other home goods. Like many other local businesses, the store weathered a substantial dip in sales during the pandemic.
As Mod Gen prepares for closure over the next few months, McDonald asked customers to stop by and shop upcoming holiday sales and inventory liquidations.
Mod Gen is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays, according to its website.
